Prince William got emotional as he spoke about a distressing personal episode while working for the air ambulance four years ago.
The Duke of Cambridge said the incident "still makes him emotional now" as he reflected on Apple's Time to Walk podcast.
The father-of-three's voice can be heard breaking as he mentions trying to save the life of an injured boy, only a few years older than his son, Prince George.
"As a human being, when you see someone in such dire circumstances, basically on death's door, you can't help but not be affected by that" said Prince William as he discusses the car crash.
It is understood that the 39-year-old was referring to a car accident that left five-year-old Bobby Hughes with brain injuries in 2017.
The Duke of Cambridge attended the scene during his time as an air pilot for the East Anglian Air Ambulance service, a role he held between 2015 to 2017.
William says the work resulted in him "taking home people's trauma, people's sadness", something he did not enjoy as he was often left sad despite having a happy home and working life.
Speaking about dealing with some of the moments he experienced, he said: "Talking about those jobs definitely helped, sharing them with the team, and ultimately, in one case, meeting the family and the patient involved who made a recovery, albeit not a full recovery, but made a recovery - that definitely helped."
