Peter Hitchens has called for England to leave the UK because he has “given up” persuading other nations to stay.
Mr Hitchens says the move to leave the UK would not be described as “independence”, and instead a “restoration of England”.
Writing a comment piece for the Daily Mail, the author and broadcaster said: “What are we waiting for?
"All the other nations of the UK are set on tearing themselves away from England. I have given up trying to persuade them to stay. Let us leave them instead.

“Have a referendum if you must, but I reckon that any party that puts an English secession from the UK in its general election manifesto will win a smashing majority.
“I would call it the restoration of England, in recollection of that other great moment in our history when Oliver Cromwell’s nightmare republican junta crumbled in 1660 and we returned with relief to our ancient laws and liberties.”
His comments come as calls grow to hold another Scottish independence referendum.
Among those calling for the vote is the Scottish National Party’s Westminster leader Ian Blackford.
Mr Blackford recently said the SNP is not seeking the Prime Minister’s “permission” for Indyref2, as the only permission it would need is the “democratic permission of the Scottish people”.
GB News' Nigel Farage also said earlier this week that he feared the break-up of the UK as the Northern Ireland Protocol row continues.
It came after Foreign Secretary Liz Truss announced that the UK Government was planning on scrapping parts of the Protocol, despite pressure from the European Union not to do so.
Speaking on GB News, Nigel said: “If you start the break-up of the United Kingdom with Northern Ireland, who knows what the consequences are for Scotland and elsewhere.”
