The minister announced her bid for leadership in a video yesterday afternoon

Journalist Benjamin Butterworth has dubbed Penny Mordaunt "Labour's worst nightmare" as the race for the Conservative Party leadership hots up.

The MP for Portsmouth North released a campaign video on Sunday, appearing to make a dig at Boris Johnson, stating the party should not be about the individual leader.

Releasing her campaign, the international trade minister said the UK’s leadership “needs to become a little less about the leader and a lot more about the ship”.

The video featured a number of inspirational scenes from the world of sport, politics and of Britain.

Ms Mordaunt played a prominent role in the Vote Leave campaign in the 2016 Brexit referendum, and has received backing from Dame Andrea Leadsom and Michael Fabricant.

Broadcaster Christine Hamilton announced her backing for Ms Mordaunt on GB News' Dan Wootton Tonight, stating: "My vote is for Penny Mordaunt."

Outlining the reasoning behind her decision, Ms Hamilton said: "I think she brings an awful lot of plusses to it, she's fresh, she's got good ideas, she's a great team person, that's what we need.

"Boris has not been a particularly good team person, I know she's had this slight problem over woke issues, but she's explained all that to my satisfaction, and I think she would be inspirational, I really do.

"I think that's what the Tories need, a fresh start. They don't need people with baggage."

Discussing the announcement from Chairman of the 1922 Committee Sir Graham Brady, who announced that Boris Johnson's successor would be confirmed on September 5, GB News presenter Dan Wootton probed Mr Butterworth on the speed of the decision, saying: "I worry this is too quick."

Mr Butterworth replied, outlining his fears and those of the Labour Party if Penny Mordaunt is confirmed as the next Prime Minister.

He said: "As far as the Labour Party is concerned, Penny Mordaunt is their worst nightmare.

"You know, I think she's the most electable of them all.

"I'm not convinced the Tory Party will vote for her yet.

"But if I were to put a bet on tonight, I would bet Penny Mordaunt on winning."

In the most recent surveys by Conservative Home, Ms Mordaunt is the top favourite, receiving 20 percent of the vote.

The current MPs running for the role of Conservative Leader are; Rishi Sunak, Sajid Javid, Penny Mordaunt, Liz Truss, Grant Shapps, Nadhim Zahawi, Tom Tugendhat, Suella Braverman, Jeremy Hunt, Kemi Badenoch, and Rehman Chishti.
