The North Norfolk Railway's beloved fish and chip train service kicks off its 2026 season today, offering passengers the chance to enjoy a classic British supper while travelling through picturesque coastal scenery.

Known as the 'Norfolk Fryer', this heritage railway experience will operate 26 journeys between the seaside town of Sheringham and the Georgian market town of Holt over the coming months.

The service continues through to September 30, giving railway enthusiasts and food lovers alike nearly six months to book their seats aboard a unique dining experience.

Departures take place on select Wednesday evenings at 6.30pm, with the round trip lasting approximately 90 minutes as trains wind their way along the Norfolk coast and countryside.

Diners will find themselves transported back in time as they take their seats in one of two carefully restored vintage settings.

The railway offers guests a choice between the elegant 1930s Art Deco Gresley Buffet Car, or the charming 1950s British Railways carriages - each providing its own distinctive period atmosphere.

The menu centres on traditional cod and chips, prepared using time-honoured local methods that have made Sheringham's fish suppers famous the world over.

The dish is cooked using beef fat sourced from "a top Sheringham Chippy", ensuring an authentic taste of the Norfolk seaside.

Those with dietary requirements need not miss out, as the service caters to vegetarian diners and offers gluten-free alternatives alongside the classic fish supper.

Tickets for the Norfolk Fryer are priced at £87.50 per table, accommodating two guests for the complete dining experience.

Given the anticipated popularity of this seasonal attraction, the railway strongly recommends booking well in advance to secure a place aboard the service.

Passengers should note that for safety reasons during food service, they are asked to remain in their seats while refreshments are being delivered.

The heritage nature of the carriages does mean certain limitations apply, with high chairs and wheelchair access unavailable on these dining services.

Dogs are also not permitted to accompany guests on the Norfolk Fryer journeys.

The railway's website provides full details for those wishing to plan their visit to this nostalgic culinary rail adventure.

Beyond the main course, ticketholders can look forward to a sweet finale with a handmade tub of ice cream from Norfolk artisan producers Ronaldo's included in their booking.

A fully licensed bar operates throughout the journey, stocking soft drinks alongside both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages for passengers to enjoy with their meal.

The combination of heritage railway travel, traditional seaside fare and vintage surroundings has proven a winning formula, with the service expected to attract considerable interest throughout its six-month run.

Early booking remains essential for anyone hoping to experience this distinctive blend of nostalgia and gastronomy, as tables are likely to fill quickly once word spreads about the Norfolk Fryer's return to the rails for another season.
