The man will be sentenced next month

A disagreement over noisy dogs has come a head after a Scottish man attacked his neighbour in their common garden.

Lankarshire man Anthony Meechan, 50, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week after admitting to the assault in July last year.

He also admitted to failing to attend court for the case in March.

Meechan choked the then-29-year-old before pinning him to the ground and repeatedly punching him.

Prosecutor Lewis Devoy said the victim was speaking to a female neighbour about 2pm on Elmbank Street on July 2 when Meechan arrived in the garden with his two dogs.

Devoy said the argument was "over the dogs which were barking".

"The accused asked (the victim) 'do you want to go?'," he added.

"(He) grabbed him by the throat and squeezed it."

Devoy detailed how Meechan then pushed the neighbour who then fell on to steps.

"Meechan fell on top of him, pinning him to the ground, and punched him repeatedly on the face and head," the prosecutor explained.

"(The victim) responded with punches of his own before the female neighbour stepped forward and pulled the accused off him."

As a result of the attack, the victim sustained grazing and had back pain in the following days.

Defence solicitor Martin Hughes said Meechan had only a "very limited criminal record".

He added that the dispute was "over the dogs more than anything else".

Sheriff Michael Higgins adjourned the sentence until August so background reports could be done.

He continued Meechan's bail.

It comes as a man was jailed for more than eight years in Leeds Crown Court this week after being found guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent and dangerous driving in a trial.

A long-running dispute boiled over when the man ran over his neighbour, leaving him with a double leg fracture.

Mohammed Hussain left the victim needing three rounds of surgery where he was required to wear an external cage after breaking his tibia and fibula, the Yorkshire Evening Post reported.

Leeds Court heard Hussain had an ongoing grievance with a man who lived on nearby King's Road.

The victim had been busy getting his young nephew from his car when Hussain drove at him in his Audi, knocking him down in February 2023.

Hussain handed himself into Elland Road Police Station.

During his interview with officers, he admitted knocking the man down in his car.

However, he told police the man had been following him and planned to attack him, which the jury did not believe.
