Mother prescribed antidepressants and anxiety medication over knife-wielding neighbours

A Scottish mother living in "significant fear and alarm" and ultimately prescribed medication revealed she is scared in her own home after video footage showed neighbours knife-fighting outside her front door.

Footage showed one man wielding a knife near her home while attempting to enter a flat.

Another video showed a physical attack in the stairwell of her building.

Scottish mother, Jenna Moffat, claimed it was regular drug users in her area which had worsened ever since she moved to the area of Dalkeith four years ago.

Moffat said there were "times that we've gone downstairs and there's been people sitting about downstairs taking drugs or people fighting in the stairwell".

"And it's the same thing when we're coming back in," she added.

"This is casing significant fear and alarm to me and my family - I'm now getting antidepressants and anxiety medication due to the stress and everything that's going on."

Moffat said she had lost sleep and the buzzer to her home "goes constantly throughout the day and night".

"People scream and shout at the door every single day to get in," she said.

Moffat said she had reported several incidents of violence, drug use and animal neglect to police over the years and they had been called "numerous times".

She had also raised the issue her landlord, Melville Housing Association, although claiming "(they) won't address the ongoing issue".

A Melville Housing Association spokesman said "we are unable to comment on individual cases" due to confidentiality, although adding they took all anti-social and criminal activity seriously.

Having reported a tenant at her apartment building, she again claimed a housing officer told her they needed to "get all their ducks in a row" before action could be taken.

Moffat said she had moved to the flat "because I was fleeing domestic violence", adding the incidents in her building was "very triggering".

"When I told my housing officer this, they didn't seem to care," she said.

"I've been asking to get moved for the last three years but I'm told they need more evidence before anything can be done."

The mother asked "how much more do you need me to complain about him and give you evidence".

Moffat has provided videos, pictures and voice notes, but each time, she claims she is told there isn't enough evidence to remove her neighbour from the property.

"Surely he's broken his contract numerous times," she said.

"I really don't know why he's not been removed from the area. I'm just getting nowhere with them."

The mother explained that she needed to request to be exchanged to another place.

"But I told them no one is going to exchange with me - everybody in Midlothian knows the person and know the sort of thing that goes on," she said.

Moffat's neighbours have also been left feeling terrified, and it is understood they avoid going downstairs out of fear of being attacked.
