"I went out into the garden and shouted, 'I've won the lottery!' at the top of my lungs. I wanted the whole world to know. It was an incredible feeling," he said.
The life-changing moment came after Gilmour reviewed his lottery account following the draw.
"I saw that the numbers matched up and just sat there staring at it. It's safe to say I couldn't sleep after that," he recalled.
The next morning brought a moment of comedy when the new millionaire placed his breakfast order.
His daughter Siobhan, 34, had rung from a cafe to ask if he wanted anything.
"A roll with a square sausage and some caviar. Don't you know I'm a millionaire?" Gilmour quipped.
The 57-year-old had asked Siobhan to visit and assist with validating his prize through The National Lottery.
His dedication to the game spans more than three decades, having participated for over 30 years.

Gilmour and his wife Anne, 57, have already treated themselves to a pair of identical Volkswagen vehicles.
High on their shopping list is a garden structure that Gilmour refers to as his "man cave".
"I've been wanting somewhere to socialise in the garden for years. It's part of Scottish culture to have your friends come for a beer or two in the garden, for a laugh and some TV," he explained.
The planned outdoor retreat will feature entertainment amenities including a billiards table, dartboard, television, gaming machine and compact bar area.
Their daughter and grandchild also stand to gain from the seven-figure prize.
"It's not just about me it's for the whole family," Gilmour said.
