Aman Naseri is accused of endangering others while making a sea journey to Britain

A teenager has become the first person to be charged of endangering migrants during a Channel crossing.

The 18-year-old is set to appear before Margate Magistrates' Court today in what is thought to be the first prosecution under recently enacted border security legislation for putting lives at risk during a Channel crossing.

Aman Naseri faces an accusation of endangering others while making a sea journey to Britain, according to HM Courts and Tribunals Service.

The charge represents a landmark case under the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act 2025, which received royal assent last month.

This legislation was brought forward by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood as part of efforts to tackle irregular migration and reduce dangerous small boat crossings.

Naseri additionally stands accused of arriving in the UK without proper entry clearance, with the alleged offence taking place on January 5.

The prosecution follows the introduction of sweeping new border legislation that came into force in December.

Under the Home Office's description, the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act establishes an expanded framework of powers and criminal offences designed to strengthen UK border controls.

The legislation aims to discourage irregular migration and prevent loss of life in the English Channel through enhanced enforcement capabilities and improved data-sharing arrangements.

It also seeks to protect the asylum system from misuse and restore public trust in immigration controls.
