Josephine Maurice was jailed for fraudulently taking a UK citizenship test for 13 people

GB News presenter Martin Daubney has claimed "lunatics have taken over the asylum system" as he unravelled a case involving a convicted fraudster.

Josephine Maurice was caught and subsequently jailed for fraudulently taking the "Life in the UK" citizenship test on behalf of at least 13 people.

Maurice, 61, a former bus driver from Enfield, London, used an array of wigs and other disguises to impersonate both male and female applicants at various test centres across the UK.

Outraged by the story, Martin said: "It’s almost funny. It’s absurd. This story is utterly astonishing.

"It just goes to show the lunatics have taken over the asylum system, imposters taking immigration and citizenship tests for other people. You couldn’t make it up. You couldn’t."

Former prisoner David Shipley agreed, telling the People's Channel: "I think what’s really astonishing is that at the court case back in May, Josephine Morris was found guilty and sent to prison, rightly.

"I thought I’d go and look into what’s actually happened since. According to the Home Office, there are at least 14 people she pretended to be so they could be granted citizenship or indefinite leave to remain.

"None of them have been removed from the country, and if they want, they’re allowed to reapply for citizenship.

"One of them has actually done that, and the application is currently being considered.

"So even attempting to cheat the system isn’t grounds for being refused citizenship in the UK.

"And apparently, we don’t remove you from the country if you do it."

Martin added: "It’s so bizarre it’s difficult to even get your head around how ridiculous this story is.

"A convicted fraudster, Josephine Morris, turning up to sit citizenship tests for completely different people, some men, some women.

"She’s pretending to be 14 different people. And even though some of the tests failed, she went to jail.

"But the people she was pretending for are still in the country and haven’t been removed.

"Please tell me I’ve just lost the plot. It’s bizarre, isn’t it?"

Mr Shipley described the situation as “baffling,” saying attempts to cheat the citizenship system don’t appear to be grounds for removal.

Morris allegedly used multiple IDs, including driving licences, to carry out the fraud yet most of the victims remain free to live in the UK.

Gaining a leave to remain status allows non-British citizens to live and work in the country without time restrictions.

The Life in the UK Test is required for people seeking to obtain leave to remain or a British citizenship.

It was introduced in 2005 as part of the Government’s efforts to ensure integration. It consists of 24 questions for applicants to show they hold enough knowledge and understanding of “British values, history and society".

To pass the exam, applicants have to get at least 18 of the questions right, a score of 75 per cent.

At the time of the arrest the Home Office said actions like this could lead to individuals being “wrongly being granted the right to remain in the country without the proper due diligence”.

A spokesman said: “This arrest represents one of the most prolific cases of this type of offending encountered by Immigration Enforcement Criminal and Financial investigators.”
