King Charles III has approved a new bank holiday for the occasion

McDonald's will be joining many businesses across the UK in shutting their doors as Queen Elizabeth II's funeral takes place.

King Charles III has approved a new bank holiday, which will go ahead on Monday September 19, the day of the funeral.

On Twitter, McDonald's said: "All of our UK restaurants will be closed on Monday until 5pm, to allow everyone at McDonald’s to pay their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II."

Despite the action taken by McDonald's and many others, it is down to individual retailers as to whether they opt to close or not.

A clear idea of what is set to remain open or closed on the day is slowly arising as more businesses announce their plans closer to the date.

A Government statement said: “Monday 19 September, the date of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral, will be a national bank holiday.

"This will allow individuals, businesses and other organisations to pay their respects to Her Majesty and commemorate Her reign, while marking the final day of the period of national mourning."

McDonald's paid tribute to the monarch on the day of her death with a statement on Twitter, saying: "The entire McDonald’s system is deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

"She dedicated her life to serving the United Kingdom & the Commonwealth, uniting us at times of both celebration & challenge. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family."
