A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to Church and Oswaldtwistle Station at 6.27am this morning following reports of a person on fire at the location.

"The person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The platform was closed whilst forensic officers carried out an initial investigation of the scene. The station reopened at 10.35am. Enquiries establishing the circumstances are ongoing."

Two witnesses told the Lancashire Telegraph that the incident was an act of self-immolation that took place around 4am.

Officers wearing forensic suits could be seen entering and leaving the platform area this morning as rush hour trains were cancelled.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

Trains were running again hours later, however a shelter remains taped off.

Black deposits, thought to be from fire, can still be seen on the platform, while one chair in the shelter appears damaged.

Local councillor Peter Britcliffe said he was very sad to hear of the incident.

The Conservative councillor for Oswaldtwistle told The Mirror: "This is a tragic incident and very sad and our condolences go to the deceased family.

"I would urge anyone to seek assistance and help if they are feeling low. I would ask people to contact organisations such as the Samaritans who are on call at all times of the day."

The tragic incident resulted in services at multiple Lancashire stations either being cancelled or revised.

National Rail said routes were affected between Blackpool North and Leeds/York, between Preston and Colne and also between Blackburn and Manchester Victoria/Headbolt Lane.
