Brueckner, 49, has been spotted 'scuttling backwards and forwards along paths so he can get around the city without being seen'

Christian Brueckner, the prime suspect in Madeleine McCann's disappearance, has been seen "living like a rat" in German woodland since his prison release in September.

The 49-year-old convicted paedophile has been spotted moving through trees and along railway lines near a German city.

He has been sheltering beneath a makeshift tarpaulin tent whilst avoiding police surveillance, images of which have been published in The Sun.

Hotels and homeless shelters have repeatedly turned Brueckner away over safety concerns.

Shortly after his release, the paedophile was spotted at a McDonald's in the state of Lower Saxony - though it remains unclear where the latest evidence of his "rat-like" existence is.

He was also removed from a city centre park after setting up camp near a nursery.

The convicted rapist, who has been spotted wearing a beanie to avoid recognition, has been forced to trespass on private land.

One resident said: "All the parks and woodland around the city, and tracks alongside the railway, must be perfect for him.

"It has meant he's been able to live like a rat, scuttling backwards and forwards along these paths so he can get around the city without being seen."

Despite using his birth name Christian Fischer to avoid detection, he continues to be identified and barred from living anywhere.

The local added: "Of course everyone knows he is the Maddie suspect, but we don't know if he is responsible for that.

"Our concerns are the crimes he is guilty of: a brutal rape and horrific child sex abuse. Who would want a person like this living in their city?"

A German court has reversed the requirement for Brueckner to remain in the country, meaning he could travel freely across Europe within days.

His electronic ankle tag will not function outside Germany - though it is said to have been malfunctioning since his release.

Brueckner created a GoFundMe page on Saturday demanding €500 (£438) to leave the country, writing: "Finally, a break from the constant wave of suspicion, the pre-judgments, and the gruelling witch hunt, and into sunny nowhere. The only thing missing is money."

The fundraiser was removed after several hours, having somehow raised €100.

German authorities are said to have approved plans to provide him with a new identity, an operation expected to cost millions of pounds.

Police officers assigned to protect Brueckner recently lost track of him when they believed he was sleeping in his tarpaulin shelter.

He was pictured him entering his lawyer's black Mercedes sports car in a residential area before eventually reporting back to authorities.

One nursery in the mystery German city wrote to parents after learning that officials planned to relocate Brueckner to their street.

It said: "We are working close together with the local police to get the best protection for the pupils. We are asking the parents to also talk to their children and explain what is going on but not to create panic."
