The prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has been spotted partying in a nightclub less than 48 hours after being released from prison.

Christian Brueckner, 49, was seen drinking in the club after deciding to immerse himself in the public.

It was reported that his identity in his new town was revealed after he walked into a shop at the main train station.

After recognising him, women began screaming.

A source told the Mirror that "Brueckner is famous in Germany".

"So the women in the shop instantly recognised him and started screaming," the source said.

"Brueckner pulled up his trousers to show his ankle tag and started saying, 'I'm innocent' ... no-one in this town wants him here".

The source added that he was "creating a problem" for everybody.

When Madeleine vanished from the ocean resort in 2007, Brueckner was living in a farmhouse on the edge of Praia da Luz.

Her parents Kate and Gerry were dining at a nearby tapas restaurant.

Brueckner is believed to be staying in a private flat which is provided by the German state.

It was revealed last week that he deemed himself homeless and and was moved into emergency accommodation.

It is understood the man was initially put in a homeless hostel before he was moved only a few hours later due to fears for his safety.

Brueckner was seen driving out of the prison, near Hanover, on Wednesday.

He was then photographed heading to a McDonald's - which was next to a shop selling baby and toddler clothes.

After his release, Brueckner must abide by conditions, including wearing an ankle tag for five years.

He faces being recalled to prison if he breaks any of the conditions which includes moving homes without telling probation staff.

While there have been lengthy police investigations, including being listed a prime suspect in Madeleine's disappearance, detectives appear to be no closer to charging him.

He has denied any involvement in the matter.

Brueckner was also cleared of a litany of sex crimes he was accused of carrying out in Portugal last October.

Prosecutors are however awaiting the outcome of an appeal against those decisions which have been lodged with Germany's Federal Court of Justice.

Brueckner has been ordered to appear at a court in Oldenburg next month after being charged with insulting a prison officer.

His lawyer, Philipp Marquort, requested his client be left alone.

He said Brueckner had "served his sentence and he is now a free man".

"As such he completely has the right to live without being disturbed or hounded," Mr Marquort said.
