German Prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters has claimed that the police "are more sure than ever" that Christian Brueckner is the man responsible for the murder of Madeleine McCann.

McCann was just three when she went missing from her Praia Da Luz holiday apartment in May 2007, and the case into her disappearance has not yet been solved.

German national Christian Brueckner, 46, was made a formal suspect by German prosecutors in 2022.

Brueckner is currently serving a seven-year prison term in Germany for drug trafficking and the rape of a 72-year-old woman in 2005.

Speaking in a new BBC Panorama documentary, 'Prime Suspect: Who Took Madeleine McCann?', Wolters said Brueckner is currently their "one suspect" in the case.

He confirmed the German police's belief that Madeleine was killed in Portugal, stating they are "sure" it is what happened to her.

When pressed by the investigative journalist, Wolters also revealed that they may know the exact location in Portugal where the murder of madeleine took place.

In connection with Brueckner, Wolters said as part of their five-year investigation into the suspect, they say Brueckner "has no alibi".

Speaking to the journalist, Wolters stated: "I can only say that we checked everything and we found no alibi."

He was asked again by the journalist: "And as far as you can see, there is no alibi?"

Wolters confirmed: "Yes, I'm sure."

When asked if they are "more sure now that he's the murderer", Wolters replied "yes, of course".

Christian Brueckner's lawyer claims he will 'no longer get a fair trial' in the case

In response to Wolters' claims made in the program, Brueckner's lawyer Friedrich Fulscher has hit back at German police.

Fulscher told the BBC: "The public prosecutor's office keeps putting itself in the public eye and saying we have the right person here and that my client is the murderer of Madeleine McCann.

"And he repeats this like a mantra and thus shapes public opinion.

"And this public opinion will become a huge problem, because I am of the opinion that Christian Brueckner can probably no longer expect a fair trial in this country."
