Police officers are still questioning a 53-year-old man

A nine-year-old child was among 79 people hurt when a vehicle ploughed into crowds during Liverpool's victory parade celebrations, police have confirmed.

The youngest victim was injured alongside others ranging in age up to 78-years-old in the collision on Water Street shortly after 6pm on Monday.

A 53-year-old man from West Derby, Liverpool, remains in police custody facing suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving and drug driving charges.

Officers have until Thursday evening to continue questioning the suspect as their investigation into the incident proceeds. All victims are understood to be British nationals.

Seven individuals remain hospitalised following the incident, with all reported to be in stable condition as of Wednesday.

Police have confirmed the collision occurred when the vehicle struck pedestrians on Water Street, which leads onto The Strand where hundreds of thousands of supporters had gathered to witness Liverpool's team bus during celebrations of their 20th Premier League triumph.

Authorities have declined to specify which substance the arrested man is suspected of taking, with a force spokesman stating they "wouldn't go into this detail at this stage of the investigation".

The suspect's custody period extends until Thursday evening while questioning continues.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

Police believe the vehicle managed to bypass security measures by following an ambulance crew who were responding to someone suffering a heart attack.

A partial road closure was in place on Dale Street, which connects to Water Street between North John Street and Exchange Street.

Traffic was being filtered down Exchange Street to prevent vehicles from accessing Water Street, with a flatbed truck and traffic cones serving as barriers, according to a force spokesman.

The security cordon was temporarily lifted to allow the ambulance through, creating the opportunity for the car to follow behind and reach the crowded area where the collision subsequently occurred.

A fundraising campaign established for those affected by the incident has collected more than £30,000 in donations.

The Liverpool Spirit Appeal received a significant £10,000 contribution from the Jamie Carragher 23 Foundation, the former Liverpool player's charitable organisation.

The appeal was launched by the Community Foundation for Merseyside, working alongside Liverpool City Council and Liverpool Charity and Voluntary Services.

Funds raised through the campaign will be distributed to individuals experiencing physical or psychological injuries resulting from the collision, as well as to community organisations providing support in the aftermath of the incident.
