'You don't get this happening in Leeds. It's not normal,' one woman said immediately after his attacks

The suspect behind Saturday's crossbow attack in Leeds has died in hospital from a "self-inflicted injury", police have said.

The man, now named as 38-year-old Owen Lawrence from Headingley, was "acting on his own", counter-terror police said in a statement on Tuesday.

Two women were seriously injured in his attack involving a crossbow and a firearm - one of which has undergone surgery for "life-threatening injuries".

Detective Chief Superintendent James Dunkerley, the head of Counter-Terrorism Policing North East, said: "Officers will continue to conduct enquiries and we ask that if anyone has information that may assist, to pass this to police.

"We understand there are concerns around the incident, and questions about how and why this has happened. Our teams are committed to carrying out an in-depth investigation to provide answers to those affected.

"We continue to work closely with West Yorkshire Police to support the local community and thank residents for their support and understanding over the weekend.

"Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by this incident."

It's understood that two of Lawrence's Facebook accounts are being assessed as part of a police investigation.

One widely-circulated - but unverified - screenshot of a Facebook post by "Oz Lawrence" appears to show a "manifesto" - in which he pledged to target "students, nightclub-goers, pub crawlers, Otley Run participants, society, humanity, the human race, neurotypicals and police".

"Lawrence" added that his "attack type" fell under "spree killing, mass murder, terrorism, revenge, misoygnic [sic] rage, homicide or suicide" - while his political views were "reactionary with some small 'l' libertarian sympathies" and he had "explored far-right ideas".

Leeds District Commander, Chief Superintendent Steve Dodds, said following Lawrence's death: "We fully appreciate the understandable shock and concern that this incident has caused in the Headingley community, and we are continuing to work closely alongside our partner agencies to support and reassure those living, working or studying in, or visiting the area.

"We have put a comprehensive visibility and engagement plan in place in the area to provide an increased police and partnership presence that will remain over the coming days, both on the streets and around key events in the community.

"We are absolutely committed to making sure that people feel safe to go about their daily lives in the area following this incident.

"As ever, we would advise people to report any suspicious or unusual behaviour to us immediately through 101 or 999 in an emergency, or to officers on the ground, or venue or event staff."

Immediately following the attack, a woman who works at Heaney & Mill restaurant on Otley Road said some people had asked to hide inside the restaurant after seeing a man with a crossbow.

She told YorkshireLive: "It was really scary, because obviously, you don't get this happening in Leeds. It's not normal. You hear about this stuff in America, but not on your doorstep. It was really scary.

"I was at work at a nearby restaurant and some girls were sitting outside. They asked if they could come in and finish what they were having because they'd seen someone with a crossbow."
