A Labour MP has accused Boris Johnson of having “stopped listening to the science” as the Prime Minister is set to ease Covid restrictions.

Downing Street said Boris Johnson intends to repeal all pandemic regulations that restrict public freedoms in England when he lays out his vision for the future on Monday, including legal duty to self-isolate after testing positive for Covid-19.

Speaking exclusively on GB News, Labour MP for Birmingham Selly Oak Steve McCabe said whilst he welcomed the announcement, he did still have concerns over the decision.

“Everyone wants to get back to some sort of sense of normality. What we don’t want to do is take unnecessary risks and discover somewhere down the line we’re back to where we started.

“We seem to have stopped listening to the science.”

Asked by Stephen and Anne whether he felt the decision was a political move, Mr McCabe replied: “For months Patrick Vallance and Professor Whitty were dominating our screens giving us advice, and all of a sudden, they seem to have disappeared. I’m not sure what that means.

“It does seem as if all the decision are all political. I’m hoping we aren’t ignoring the science altogether.”

The Labour MP added the decision felt sudden: “It’s not that long ago that you were interviewing people about new variants.

“I’m surprised all of a sudden someone is able to say that’s it we’ve decided it’s over.”

Dr Mike Tildesley, a member of Sage’s modelling subgroup, has also expressed concerns that it is too early for the scrapping of self-isolation rules and free Covid-19 testing.
