Oliver Holland suffered a brain bleed and a collapsed lung as a result of the horrific crash

An 11-year-old schoolboy suffered horrific injuries after he was crushed by a helicopter which crashed at a world-famous California beach.

Oliver Holland had been enjoying a day by the sea when the incident occurred on October 11.

He suffered a brain bleed and a collapsed lung and is thought to be currently in hospital having undergone surgery.

Two other bystanders were also injured - while the two passengers of the aircraft survived after being pulled from the wreckage.

All five people injured in the accident were taken to hospital by emergency services.

A GoFundMe page has now been set up by Oliver's sister Madeline Ashwell to raise money to cover his medical costs.

She said: "We are praying for a safe recovery and we can't really say anything else. We don't know what is going to happen."

She also described her brother as "the smartest, funniest boy I have ever known".

As of Wednesday evening, more than $110,000 (£82,374) had been raised from around 2,500 donations.

Ms Ashwell added that because of Oliver's injuries, his parents would be unable to work.

On October 13, she posted an update which said: "Oliver's condition seems to be getting better. Doctors cannot say much due to it still being in the early stages but we are hopeful."

Footage of the accident saw the helicopter spiralling through the air before it crashed into palm trees and a building near the Waterfront Beach Resort.

Authorities responded to the crash between Beach Boulevard and Twin Dolphin at 2pm local time, and said the aircraft was found "up against a bridge".

The aircraft has since been identified as a twin-engine Bell 222 piloted by Eric Nixon who, according to the Orange County Register, suffered broken ribs, crushed vertebrae and several bruises.

Authorities confirmed that Mr Nixon was associated with the annual Cars N' Copters event which took place the following day.
