22-year-old football star Katie Meyer has been found dead on the Stanford university campus.
Meyer, the captain and goalkeeper of the university's football team, died at an on-campus residence hall.
The cause of her death remains unclear, but the university has stated that there was no danger to other students at the time.
The athlete helped Stanford win the national championship in 2019, while studying international relations and history.
Meyer pulled off major heroics to help Stanford secure victory in the 2019 NCAA College Cup final, saving two penalties during a shootout following a goalless draw.
The university praised Meyer's "commitment" in an emotional statement.
"Katie was extraordinarily committed to everything and everyone in her world.
"`Her friends describe her as a larger-than-life team player in all her pursuits, from choosing an academic discipline she said 'changed my perspective on the world and the very important challenges that we need to work together to overcome' to the passion she brought to the Cardinal women’s soccer program and to women’s sports in general".
