The teenager's message outlined how he believed he wasn't going to make it

Jay Slater's mother has revealed that her son sent a social media message to a friend not long before falling to his death in Tenerife.

The Snapchat message from the 19-year-old was only delivered after his mother, Debbie Duncan, logged into his account once she finally retrieved his iPhone.

Ms Duncan said the message was received by Mr Slater's friend Bradley Geoghegan when speaking in a Channel 4 documentary.

She said the friend was left frightened by the message.

"When we signed into Jay's Snapchat there was an unsent message from Jay to Brad," she said.

"So the message was obviously just flying around and then the message sent to Brad, which obviously gave Brad a fright."

Ms Duncan said Mr Geoghegan "messaged me straight away", asking whether she was on her son's phone.

She replied, saying: "Yeah, we've just signed into his Snapchat."

Mr Geoghegan told the mother that her son's message read: "Listen, I'm not going to make it."

The Lancashire teenager had travelled to the Spanish holiday island last June as he was attending the New Rave Generation festival along with two friends.

He left the Papagayo nightclub in the early hours of June 17.

Mr Slater had met two older men from east London and travelled 30 miles to an Airbnb in the remote Masca region.

Mr Slater posted his Snapchat location to his friends at 6.22am.

He then sent a final clip from outside the Airbnb at 7.21am.

The teenager sent a video saying he "just took a 12k rolly" in other messages - which referred to a stolen Rolex.

Mr Slater also claimed to have taken two knives "in case it all kicks off".

The coroner deemed that the messages were not relevant and it was likely Mr Slater was showing off.

According to his smartwatch, Mr Slater started walking from the Airbnb about 8am and turned into the mountains.

The teenager called his friend Bradley a short time later to tell him he was trying to walk home.

He then called his friend Lucy Law at 8.32am, saying he needed water, was scared and cut his leg on a cactus.

A final 22-second call took place almost 20 minutes later where he told Lucy that his phone was on one per cent and he was lost.

Ms Duncan told The Times about when she realised her son was missing and that the family decided to fly to Tenerife straight away.

His disappearance turned into a conspiracy on social media.

Mr Slater's body was discovered on July 15 with a coroner ruling that he had fallen 65-80ft and fatally fractured his skull and pelvis.
