Two men, aged 76 and 34, were treated at the scene for stab wounds

The Golders Green terror suspect has been named as a Somali translator Essa Suleiman, it has been revealed.

The Somali-born British national has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody.

It follows an attack in North London on Wednesday, where two Jewish men were stabbed.

In a statement delivered after the incident, Sir Mark Rowley, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, said the suspect had a "history of serious violence and mental health issues".

Suleiman, whose identity was revealed by the Telegraph, was also suspected of being involved in a prior "altercation" with another person in south-east London before allegedly leaving for Golders Green.

The suspect allegedly attempted to stab police officers and was tasered before being arrested.

Two men, aged 76 and 34, were treated at the scene for stab wounds.

Moishe Shine and Moshe Ben Baila were taken to the hospital and are in a stable condition.

The 45-year-old suspect was known to the Prevent counter-extremism programme and was referred in 2020, the Metropolitan Police confirmed.

The case was closed within the year, the force said.

Prevent is the Government-funded agency designed to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.

The Metropolitan Police said: "We can confirm the suspect was known to the Prevent programme and was subject to a Prevent referral in 2020, which was closed in the same year.

They added: "Given the investigation remains ongoing, we will not be providing any further information in respect of this matter at this time and we remain focused on securing justice for the victims of this attack."

This morning, the Prime Minister said the criminal justice system must respond to the suspected terror attack in a "swift, agile and visible way" during a meeting with policing bosses in Downing Street.

The PM and his Cabinet are facing growing calls to tackle the surge of antisemitism across the country, particularly in London.

This morning, in the wake of the knife attack, the Government pledged to spend an extra ÂŁ25million on protection for Jewish communities across the UK.

Whitehall confirmed legislation will be fast-tracked to target individuals acting on behalf of state-sponsored groups in the coming weeks.

As a result, anyone acting on behalf of a state-sponsored group is able to be investigated and prosecuted under the National Security Act.

Sir Keir was booed and heckled during a visit to a Hatzola ambulance station in North London, as between 50 and 100 people gathered to protest.

Local residents, who held signs criticising the Prime Minister, got increasingly annoyed when he drove right past them into the gated ambulance station, chanting: "Show your face" and "Jew harmer".
