One man has been arrested following the attack on two Jewish men

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp has expressed his outrage at the "sickening" attack on two Jewish men in Golders Green.

Speaking to GB News, Mr Philp called for "much tougher action" from the Government to protect the Jewish community in Britain.

Mr Philp told GB News: "Horrifying news. It appears to be yet another horrendous antisemitic attack on the streets of Golders Green.

"The man, the perpetrator, is reported to have been deliberately targeting people wearing Jewish clothing, and I've also had a report from someone who was on the scene suggesting he may have been shouting in Arabic during the attack. That is not confirmed, but it's the report that I've received."

The Tory MP called on the Labour Government to take "tougher action" to help protect the Jewish community from such attacks.

He said: "Clearly, this is an attack which is appalling, antisemitic, and it's not the first. It's been happening again and again and again, and it's time the Government and the country get a lot more serious about protecting Britain's Jewish community.

"This just can't keep happening. We've seen Iran sponsoring antisemitic attacks, we've seen Islamist extremism running rampant, and words from the Government are no longer enough.

"We need much, much tougher action because Britain's Jewish community is under attack and this has to end."

Mr Philp suggested that if Iranian agents are behind the attack, they should be "expelled".

He told GB News: "This is yet another sickening antisemitic attack on the streets of London. Not enough is being done to protect Britain's Jewish community.

"The Government needs to get a lot more serious about stopping this kind of thing from happening and arresting the perpetrators, and if Iranian agents are behind it, they should be expelled.

"And if people who are foreign nationals express extremism, antisemitism or sympathy for terrorism, they should be deported – this just has to end."

Recalling his visit to Golders Green a matter of weeks ago following an arson attack on community ambulances, Mr Philp concluded that the Labour Government needs "actions, not words" to ensure attacks like this are prevented.

He said: "These are words, and we need actions. I was in Golders Green just a few weeks ago after the attack on the Hatzola ambulances.

"We've seen attacks on synagogues; it just goes on and on, and the action being taken by the Government so far is frankly not enough."

In a statement, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said the suspect "also attempted to stab police officers" and was "tasered before being arrested".

They said: "At 11.16am on Wednesday, April 29, officers responded following reports of people stabbed in Highfield Avenue.

"Two men – one in his 70s and one in his 30s – were treated at the scene for stab wounds. They have been taken to hospital and both are in a stable condition.

"A 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He was taken into custody, where he remains. We are working to establish his nationality and background.

"Specialist officers from Counter Terrorism Policing are leading the investigation and working with the Metropolitan Police to establish the full circumstances and any links to terrorism."
