However, another group followed shortly afterwards and installed Union flags in their place.

Speaking to Patrick Christys, the man said: "To say I am proud of our flag is an understatement, I live in the beleaguered region of Tower Hamlets. Recently, flagpoles there had Palestinian flags on them. Someone came round and took them down, replacing them with Saint George’s crosses.

But just 15 minutes later, Tower Hamlets Council turned up and removed the St George’s crosses.

"What they didn’t realise was that 15 minutes behind them came another team who put up Union flags.

Patrick asked: "So is this really worthwhile? Anyone taking those flags down?"

He laughed and said: "No, it’s not. We dare them to take them down."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Tower Hamlets Council has said all unauthorised flag displays will be removed.

Under Aspire Party leadership, the council said the flags would be taken down “as soon as possible.”

A spokesperson acknowledged residents may want to express their views, but stressed the authority must protect public infrastructure.

“Where flags are attached to council-owned infrastructure without permission, they may be removed as part of routine maintenance,” the representative added.

Tower Hamlets Council has stressed its duty to manage borough property properly.

Officials said any flags placed on council-owned infrastructure without permission would be removed during routine maintenance, no matter what flags were involved.

In March 2024, Mayor Lutfur Rahman ordered the removal of Palestinian flags from municipal buildings and street furniture.

Jewish residents said the displays made them feel excluded from their community, describing them as “oppressive and intimidating.”
