It has sparked anger with Robert Jenrick claiming the council 'allowed Palestinian flags to be publicly displayed on lampposts'

A second local authority has vowed to pull down any English or British flags which patriotism campaigners tie to lampposts.

Tower Hamlets council, in east London, vowed to remove the flags which had been put up as part of the "Operation Raise the Colours" patriotism campaign "as soon as possible".

A spokesman for the Aspire Party led council said: "We are aware members of the public have been putting up St George's flags on various structures.

"While we recognise people wish to express their views, we have a responsibility to monitor and maintain council infrastructure."

"Where flags are attached to council-owned infrastructure without permission, they may be removed as part of routine maintenance," the spokesman told The Telegraph.

In March 2024, the Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, ordered the removal of Palestinian flags from council buildings and lampposts.

It was said Jewish families found the "oppressive and intimidating" symbols made them feel unwelcome in the borough.

However, the council has been accused of "two-tier bias" because the Palestinian flags were not taken down for months.

The Shadow Justice Secretary, Robert Jenrick, said: "Tower Hamlets council have allowed Palestinian flags to be publicly displayed on lampposts but not the flag of our country."

"This absurd national self-loathing must end," he told The Telegraph. "This is yet more two-tier bias against the British people. We must be one country united under the Union flag."

Former Conservative leader, Sir Iain Duncan Smith, said: "Why would we leave [Palestinian flags] up and take down flags that represent one of the countries of the UK?"

Former Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, called the national flag "a great source of pride and patriotism" which "should be flown from as many places as possible as often as possible".

It comes after Birmingham council ordered hundreds of Union and St George's flags be removed from lampposts across the city, while lighting the library up in the colours of Pakistan and then India to mark their independence.

Despite being up to 25ft off the ground, the local authority claimed that the flags, which had been raised in a "patriotic outpouring", put the lives of pedestrians and motorists "at risk".

Reform UK MP, Lee Anderson, told The Telegraph: "This is nothing short of a disgrace and shows utter contempt for the British people."

The patriotic campaign of raising flags is sweeping the nations, with British or English flags also raised in Swindon, Bradford, Newcastle and Norwich.

According to guidance published by the Government in 2021, "flags are a very British way of expressing joy and pride".

It adds: "The Government wants to see more flags flown, particularly the Union flag."

However, it also warns that flags must not "obscure, or hinder the interpretation of official road, rail, waterway or aircraft signs, or otherwise make hazardous the use of these types of transport".
