A six-year-old boy cried to his mother as he asked "am I dying?" after their American Staffordshire terrier attacked him and ripped skin from his scalp.
Vick Zidko was making his way down the stairs at his home in Doncaster, South Yorkshire when their family dog clamped his mouth around his head.
The six-year-old pleaded with the dog to stop attacking him but it continued biting and scratching his head and back.
Just two weeks prior, the family had bought the dog, named Diesel, on Facebook.

Eventually, the boy's family were able to open the dog's mouth after his father Vitalijus put his arm in the dog's jaw to protect his son.
Following the incident, Zidko cried: "Mummy, am I dying?".
The youngster spent five days in hospital and had the torn-off piece of scalp reattached before he was discharged.
Officers are investigating the attack and the dog was destroyed by police.
The family had thought "long and hard" about getting a dog and described Diesel as "really soft" and "jumping around", according to father of the family, Vitalijus.
Last Thursday at 7pm, the dog was chewing a bone just before the attack began leading Vick's sister Gabriel, 18, to think "it was as if he saw Vick as a chew toy".
Police arrived at the scene following the incident and found a piece of Vick's scalp on the floor at the home.
"I grabbed Vick and ran to the bedroom, locking the door," Mother Eugenija told The Mirror.

"I was trying to calm him down. I put a towel on his head to stop the bleeding. He saw all the blood and said, 'Mummy, am I dying?'.
"Then he asked 'is [his twin brother] Nick and Gabriel OK'."
She said that her son is now having bad dreams where he relives the moment the dog attacked him.
Eugenija added: "He said, 'Promise me, we'll have no more dogs in our house'."
