US President Donald Trump has said he is “glad” former FBI director Robert Mueller has died, accusing him of “hurting innocent people” in a scathing Truth Social post.
The 81-year-old official oversaw the investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Mr Mueller’s family confirmed his death on Saturday, though no cause was specified.
The former special counsel had revealed his Parkinson's disease diagnosis in August last year, having first received the news in 2021.

Following the announcement, President Trump took to Truth Social to write: “Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead.”
“He can no longer hurt innocent people!”
Following his FBI tenure, Mr Mueller was appointed special counsel by the Department of Justice to examine whether Mr Trump's 2016 campaign had coordinated with Russian efforts to influence the election.
The investigation, conducted between 2017 and 2019, did not establish that campaign members had conspired or coordinated with the Kremlin.

However, it concluded that Moscow had actively worked to secure a Trump victory, believing it would benefit from his presidency.
Additionally, it was determined that the Trump campaign anticipated gaining an electoral advantage from material obtained and disseminated through Russian operations.
The 22-month investigation yielded indictments resulting in convictions of several prominent associates of Mr Trump.
Among those were campaign chairman Paul Manafort, deputy campaign manager Rick Gates, national security adviser Michael Flynn and personal attorney Michael Cohen.

Political operative Roger Stone and former campaign adviser George Papadopoulos were also found guilty, bringing the total to eight guilty pleas.
President Trump subsequently issued pardons in 2020 to Flynn, Stone and others convicted during the investigation.
Throughout the probe, the US leader characterised Mr Mueller’s investigation as a “witch hunt” and a “hoax”.
Mr Mueller’s career in law enforcement spanned more than four decades, encompassing roles as a line prosecutor, US attorney, and, ultimately, FBI chief.

He assumed leadership of the bureau just days before the September 11 attacks in 2001.
During his tenure, he oversaw its transformation from a domestic crime-fighting agency into a global intelligence organisation centred on counterterrorism.
His 12-year incumbency made him the longest-serving FBI director since J Edgar Hoover.
During this period, he served under both Presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama.
