Former Crossroads actress dies after being struck by delivery van

The 96 year old, who starred as Mavis Hooper in the British soap during the 1980s, died following the fatal collision.

In a career that spanned five decades, she worked with acting legends Albert Finney and Sir Ian McKellen.

A statement from her family said: "Charmian was a much-loved aunt and great-aunt and a dear friend to many. At 96 she was still full of life and energy and fiercely independent.

"We are devastated that her life has been brought to an end so suddenly and tragically, but we will treasure our memories of her zest for life and the many good times we shared with her."

Abrahams starred in more than 50 episodes of the Central/ATV soap before leaving in 1985.

She featured in several TV and radio shows including Musical Playhouse in 1959 and BBC Sunday-Night Theatre in 1950.

The incident happened on Lordswood Road in Harborne at about 11.40am.

Now, an investigation has been launched by West Midlands Police.

The force's Serious Collision Investigation Unit is probing the crash, which happened on Lordswood Road in Harborne at about 11.40am.

Investigators have appealed for further witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.

It is understood that she was struck by a Sainsbury's delivery van.

A spokesman for the supermarket told Birmingham Live: "An incident took place involving one of our drivers earlier this week.

"We are supporting the colleague involved in any way we can and helping the police with their investigation.

"Our thoughts are also with the woman's family at this sad and difficult time."
