Eugene Hanna, a 30-year-old rugby league player from Auckland's Glenora Bears, passed away on Tuesday following injuries sustained during a match ten days earlier.
The Premier Reserves squad member was hurt during his club's season opener against Te Atatu on 2 May, suffering what has been described as an "unsurvivable" injury.
Hanna remained in Auckland Hospital for the duration before his death, though the club has not disclosed specific details about the nature of his injuries.
The Te Atatu Roosters, his opponents on the day of the incident, have received gratitude from the Bears for assistance provided by their members at the scene.

The New Zealand Rugby League responded to the tragedy by issuing a statement on Thursday that underscored the critical importance of safety measures in the sport.
The governing body specifically highlighted its protocols surrounding head injuries and concussions, stating: "NZRL places the utmost important on player safety and welfare and work hard to prevent such tragic outcomes.
"We have rigorous head injury and concussion protocols in place and work with our rugby league community to ensure appropriate resources and education are provided year-round."
Players experiencing head injuries or related symptoms were urged to adhere to established guidelines, seek proper medical attention, and only resume playing when cleared to do so.
Janet Hunt, chairwoman of the Glenora Bears, paid tribute to Hanna in a statement posted to Facebook on Wednesday.
"Eugene was a valued player in our Premier Reserves squad, and although a new Bears member had good friends within the club," she said.

The club expressed appreciation to attending paramedics and hospital staff for their care during the fortnight following his injury.

Renegades FC, a team in the New Zealand Christian Football League where he also played football, shared their grief on Instagram, declaring: "Eugene is the heartbeat of Renegades."
Those who knew him described the 30-year-old as "the biggest character" within the sporting community.
Beyond his abilities on the pitch, teammates and club officials remembered him fondly for his personal qualities, calling him "a brilliant player, but most importantly, the kindest person."
