The sous-chef was allegedly crushed beneath the wheels of the vehicle

A British chef has had both of his legs amputated after his boss allegedly ran over him with his Land Rover.

Joe Claridge sustained serious injuries in the car park of The Jane - a two-Michelin-star restaurant in Antwerp, Belgium.

The horror incident is believed to have happened after a staff party which went on until the early hours of the morning on January 8.

Head of The Jane, celebrity chef Nick Bril reportedly reversed into Claridge - who was behind the vehicle - and crushed him beneath the wheels.

A jogger who witnessed the horror said the celebrity chef did not immediately call emergency services and allegedly failed to mention that he had run over the victim.

Claridge was kept in an artificial coma for 50 days at Antwerp University Hospital (UZA) in Edegems while he underwent multiple surgeries.

The 37-year-old emerged from his coma at the end of February but has only recently been able to speak about the tragedy after having a breathing tube removed.

Following the incident, Claridge had his two lower limbs amputated due to the weight of the Land Rover.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Bril's lawyer, Omar Souidi, confirmed to Belgian press that his client had not been arrested.

His vehicle was seen being taken away by authorities as part of the investigation.

Souidi said: "Nick's thoughts are currently going out to the victim. It's his only concern at the moment. He hopes that things will turn out well for his employee."

He also reportedly confirmed that Bril had given a positive breath test, adding: "Further investigation will have to show whether there is a causal link between my client's alcohol intoxication and the incident itself."

Claridge told Belgian broadcaster ATV that he had enjoyed his time at The Jane working as a sous-chef.

But provided no comment on the incident - which is being treated as an accident by police.

Reports suggest Claridge appeared to be lying on the ground before he was struck by the vehicle.
