Residents have been told to keep windows closed

The West Midlands Ambulance Service have been called to a large industrial fire in Birmingham.

Plumes of smoke can be seen coming from an industrial unit on Lifford Lane.


Motorists have been advised to avoid the area whilst emergency services deal with the incident.

A statement from West Midlands Fire Service said: "Shortly after 10.30am on Wednesday (April 1), we responded to Lifford Lane, Kings Norton, Birmingham.

"At present, 12 fire engines, a hydraulic aerial platform and a 4×4 brigade response vehicle are in attendance, crewed by around 60 firefighters from Kings Norton, Bournbrook, Northfield, Woodgate Valley, Highgate, Smethwick, Aston, Aldridge, Erdington, Handsworth, West Bromwich and Haden Cross stations.

"Further resources are expected at the scene.

"This is a significant scrapyard fire, which has created a large smoke plume in the area. Because of this, if you live or work nearby please close your windows and doors.

"Traffic is disrupted, so please avoid the area whilst we work at the scene."

West Midlands Ambulance Service also stated: "We're currently in attendance with fire and police colleagues at a large industrial fire on Lifford Lane, Birmingham.

If you are a nearby resident, it's advisable to close your windows & doors due to smoke.

Motorists should avoid the area whilst emergency services respond to this incident.

West Midlands Fire Service have said the incident is now under control.

They issued an update at 12pm saying: "Firefighters have brought the fire under control.

"A nearby railway line has not been affected by this incident, and trains are running as normal.

"Please, continue to keep your windows and doors closed if you live or work in the area, and avoid Lifford Lane and surrounding roads whilst we work at the scene."
