The village previously had over half a dozen names

A village with three different spellings has finally settled on its correct spelling following years of confusion.

Drivers have been previously left in chaos, heading to the wrong locations when trying to reach the Bedfordshire village.

Yelden, Yielden and Yeildon have all been used on road signs, with the Royal Mail and the Office for National Statistics also confusing the area.

It has been settled by Bedford Borough Council that the correct spelling of the village is "Yelden".

In January last year, the council used the spelling "Yielden" in official documents and social media posts.

However, a spokesman for the council confirmed: "Where signs are replaced, we will be using 'Yelden' as the spelling for this village."

Dating back to 1086 in the Domesday Book, the village has had countless different names since it was first listed as Giveldene.

It also had the names: Yueldene, Yealdon, Evelden, and Yeveldene.

A survey was distributed to villages on the issue in 1988, in which 44 people preferred the spelling of "Yelden" compared to 30 who favoured "Yielden".

Residents on social media found the different spellings hilarious and entertaining.

One person wrote: "I grew up in the village in the late 70s, 80s and early 90s. It was always Yelden and then on the Melchbourne side, a new sign was put up spelling it as Yielden.

"That made me mad. I said to my parents I was going to white it out, but I never did."

Another said that residents still debate the spelling in the local pub.

One user commented: "I thought they were two different places."

A spokesman for Bedford Borough Council said: "We are aware of the difference in spelling in the signs around this village.

"Some years ago, we contacted the parish council to ask for clarification as to how their village name should be spelt.

"The response from the parish council was that they have no preference as to the spelling of their name, as the difference in spelling has been used over many years.

"The local road signs in Bedford borough use the spelling as 'Yelden', the roads in Northamptonshire use both 'Yelden' and 'Yielden', and the spelling by Highways England on the A-road [trunk road] was 'Yieldon'.

"Where signs are replaced, we will be using 'Yelden' as the spelling for this village."
