Met Police officers were heard laughing about abuses of power and mocking rape victims

The Metropolitan Police are facing fresh claims of institutional racism and misogyny after a bombshell Panorama documentary aired on Wednesday night.

An undercover probe captured officers mocking rape victims, bragging about their use of force and calling for immigrants to be shot.

The expose comes after Scotland Yard previously vowed to purge "rogue officers" from its ranks in the aftermath of the rape and murder of Sarah Everard by off-duty constable Wayne Couzens in 2021.

BBC Panorama undercover reporter Rory Bibb spent seven months working as a designated detention officer in Charing Cross police station in London as part of the documentary.

During the filming, Mr Bibb captured footage of a conversation around immigrants with an off-duty officer, where he can be heard saying: "Either put a bullet through his head or deport him.

"And the ones that s**g, rape women, you'd do the c*** (with a weapon) and let them bleed out."

Officers were also caught referring to Algerians and Somalians as "scum", with another heard saying: "I've seen too many Islamics committing crimes. Their way of life is not the correct way of life.

"You do find that the ones that are causing the most crime are Muslim.

"Islam is a problem. A serious problem I think. Muslims hate us. They f****** hate us."

On a separate occasion, an officer seen detaining a woman who wearing fancy dress said: "Ah awesome. I've paid money to go to clubs and see women dressed like this."

Met Police officers were also heard laughing and boasting about using excessive force multiple times.

Footage captured individuals within the force talking about using pressure points on an autistic child in a police van.

Another officer was heard describing how if suspects refused to give their fingerprints, he could pull two fingers with enough force to break the tendons.

It is not the first time officers from Charing Cross have been embroiled in a scandal, with a police watchdog report detailing messages making light of the rape of women, the deaths of black babies and the Holocaust were circulated by 19 officers at the same station.

POLICE - READ THE LATEST:

In the wake of the documentary, a total of nine serving officers, alongside one ex-officer and a detention officer, are under gross misconduct investigation with one officer additionally accused of perverting the course of justice.

In a statement after the documentary aired, Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said: “The behaviour depicted in this programme is reprehensible and completely unacceptable.

“Officers behaving in such appalling, criminal ways, let down our communities and will cause some to question if their sons and daughters are safe in our cells, and whether they would be believed and respected as victims of crime. For that, I am truly sorry.

“We have disbanded the custody team at Charing Cross, made changes to local leadership and have begun wider work to identify any other areas of concern in detention teams across the Met."

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the footage shown by the BBC as "sickening".

She added: “The disturbing scenes in this footage are sickening. I welcome the Independent Office for Police Conduct fully and urgently investigating all the issues raised in this report.

“It is right that the Metropolitan Police have condemned this, and we fully support their pledge to root out those unfit to serve the public. I know this is a top priority for the Commissioner.

“We have given police chiefs the powers to automatically sack officers who fail background checks and dismiss those guilty of gross misconduct, and we expect them to be used."
