The date some state pension payments will be made is temporarily changing in August 2023.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will pay some state pension and benefit payments in England and Wales earlier than usual in August.

This is due to the August bank holiday, which falls on Monday, August 28.

People who are expecting a DWP payment that day, including those who get the state pension then, will instead get it early, on the first working day prior.

This means the payment should be made on Friday, August 25.

How is the state pension paid?

The state pension is usually paid every four weeks.

If the normal payment day is a bank holiday, those due the sum may be paid earlier.

The payment day depends on the final two digits of the recipient’s National Insurance number.

State pension payment dates

Last two digits of National Insurance number – Payment day of the week

  • 00 to 19 – Monday
  • 20 to 39 – Tuesday
  • 40 to 59 – Wednesday
  • 60 to 79 – Thursday
  • 80 to 99 – Friday

There are different rules if the person claiming the state pension lives abroad.

The state pension isn’t paid automatically when a person reaches state pension age

PA

The state pension isn’t paid automatically when a person reaches state pension age.

Instead, a person needs to make a claim for the payment.

The state pension age is currently rising, meaning some people will need to wait longer than they previously would have done to apply.

People can check when they are currently due to reach their state pension age online via the "Check your state pension age" tool on the government website.
