Restaurant closures are ramping up with dozens of Pizza Hut locations set to shut down for good

Pizza Hut has confirmed the location of the 68 restaurants based in the UK which are now earmarked for closure, after the firm behind its British operations fell into administration.

Furthermore, the popular fast food chain has unveiled the 11 delivery sites which will be shut down part of a restructuring with 1,210 workers believed to be at risk of redundancy.

DC London Pie, the parent company running Pizza Hut’s UK dine-in restaurants under a franchise deal, appointed administrators from corporate finance firm FTI earlier this week.

US hospitality giant Yum! Brands, which owns the global Pizza Hut business, revealed has now bought the UK restaurant operation in a pre-pack administration deal, saving 64 sites.

Dannie Hewson, AJ Bell's head of financial analysis, broke down the impact on the wider high street economy as a result of this latest round of looming closures.

She explained: "There was forward momentum for Yum! Brands, which has taken the UK dine-in Pizza Hut business back under its wing after previous owner DC London fell into administration.

"Though its restaurants footprint will be significantly decreased, with 68 outlets set to shut their doors. Fewer than half of the restaurants will continue to operate following a pre-pack administration, likely with the loss of over a thousand jobs.

“DC London Pie had rescued Pizza Hut’s UK operations from insolvency less than a year ago, but making a success of a big-name casual dining businesses is a tough job and one which would have been made harder by increased labour costs and ongoing consumer caution.

"Taking back the brand looks a smart move by Yum! Brands as it has decades of data about how pizza lovers like to consume and exactly what factors need to coalesce to make a location a success."

Isabelle Shepherd, a partner at HaysMac, added: "The pizza market is particularly competitive with many new entrants taking market share, which has reduced demand for some of the more established brands who may be seen as less exciting.

"The increases in national insurance and the national living wage in April have compounded liquidity and cost issues.

"Hospitality businesses are suffering from the twin pressures of reduced sales and significantly increased labour costs, squeezing cashflows and working capital. Sadly, these pressures are too high for many to bear, including some beloved household names."
