Mobile branches across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will shut by January next year

Dozens of communities across the UK are set to lose vital banking services after NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland confirmed 46 mobile branches will shut down.

The closures, due to be completed by January 9, 2026, will affect customers in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Thousands who rely on the travelling branches for day-to-day banking will be impacted.

The mobile banking units – vans and lorries fitted with counters and staff – currently visit local towns and villages up to five days a week, except on Bank Holidays and Christmas Day. They provide essential services such as cash withdrawals, deposits and bill payments.

NatWest Group, which owns NatWest, RBS and Ulster Bank, said the closures were part of a wider shake-up but insisted it would continue to serve the same number of routes overall.

Communities already deprived of traditional banking facilities face significant hardship from these closures.

The mobile branches serve as vital access points for residents in areas without permanent bank buildings, particularly benefiting elderly customers and those who struggle with online banking platforms.

These travelling banks have functioned as essential lifelines, bringing financial services directly to underserved locations. Without them, affected customers must travel greater distances to conduct basic banking transactions or adapt to digital alternatives that many find challenging.

The withdrawal of these services particularly impacts vulnerable groups who depend on face-to-face banking support and cash-based transactions in their daily lives.

A NatWest spokesperson stated: "We continue to invest in creating a sustainable branch network and we are proud to be the only UK bank that operates a cash-based mobile branch service to serve communities without easy access to banking services across all four nations.

"We regularly review our network to ensure we are delivering the best coverage for customers. While we will continue to service the same number of routes, we will be removing a small number of stops on those routes where there is duplication with a banking hub."

The company emphasised that despite the closures, it remains committed to maintaining mobile banking services across the UK, albeit with reduced stops in certain locations.

Several alternatives remain available for affected customers seeking banking services. The Post Office's 11,684 branches throughout the UK offer basic financial transactions, though they cannot process new account openings, personal loans or mortgages. Customers can locate their nearest branch via postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder.

Advanced ATMs are being deployed nationwide, enabling cash deposits, balance enquiries, PIN changes and withdrawals. Bank of Scotland, Barclays, Halifax, Lloyds, NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank have already joined this initiative.

Additionally, 250 banking hubs are planned for completion by 2025's end. NatWest Group customers can utilise any branch within their network - NatWest customers may visit RBS locations and vice versa for routine services.
