Inheritance tax rules are set to change in the coming years

Britons are paying more money in inheritance tax (IHT) bills to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) than ever before, according to the latest Government figures.

Polling has suggested a sizable proportion of the public want to either see the levy scrapped or the threshold at which estates become liable raised.

Between April and September 2025, the Treasury raked in £4.4billion from IHT receipts ahead of Chancellor Rachel Reeves's looming changes to the tax.

In last year's Budget, Ms Reeves confirmed pensions and agricultural assets will become liable for inheritance tax from April 2027.
