Boots and Argos are among the retailers closing locations across the country this month

High streets across the country are being hit with another wave of store closures in March 2024.

Boots, Argos, Lidl and Costa Coffee are some of the retailers which will be shutting down locations this month.

This comes shortly after this week’s announcement from The Body Shop confirmed it will close another 75 stores this year.

More than 10,000 shops closed in the UK last year, with 120,000 jobs being lost in the process, according to new research.

High street staple Wilko left the high street last year but Wilko stores have since reopened under new ownership.

After The Range owner CDS Superstores bought Wilko’s brand, intellectual property and website, they have opened three Wilko stores and three more store openings have been announced. Meanwhile, other stores have decided to relocate for various reasons.

Here is a full list of the Boots, Argos, Lidl and Costa Coffee stores that are confirmed to close later this month:

Boots

  • Pool, Redruth, Cornwall - March 1, 2024
  • North Kenton, Newcastle - March 3, 2024
  • Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield - March 9, 2024
  • East Parade, Heworth, York - March 9, 2024
  • Sprowston, Norwich - March 16, 2024
  • Castlecroft, Wolverhampton - March 21, 2024
  • Rainham, Kent - March 30, 2024
  • Bradmore, Wolverhampton - date TBD.

A spokesperson said last year: "Evolving the store estate in this way allows Boots to concentrate its team members where they are needed and focus investment more acutely in individual stores with the ambition of consistently delivering an excellent and reliable service in a fresh and up-to-date environment."

The pharmacy has confirmed its plan to reduce its store estate from 2,200 to around 1,900, in a move to concentrate team members “where they are needed”.

Argos

  • Overgate Shopping Centre, Dundee – March 2, 2024
  • Kingstown, Carlisle – date TBD.

A spokesperson from Argos said: "We are currently talking to our colleagues in our Carlisle Argos store, which we have made the difficult decision to close.

“We understand this will be an unsettling time for those affected and we are supporting them in every way we can, including exploring opportunities for colleagues to redeploy within Argos and Sainsbury’s."

Lidl

  • High Street, Hanham, Bristol – March 1, 2024.

GB News has contacted Lidl for comment. Last month, Lidl outlined plans to rollout 12 new stores across the country as part of a funding pitch to investors.

GB News has contacted Costa Coffee for comment.

Earlier this week, Marks and Spencer also confirmed it would be closing down its site in Hexham, Northumberland but no date has been confirmed.

An M&S spokesperson told GB News: "We have announced that we are investing £480million in bigger, better stores across the UK.

"Our store rotation and investment programme is about making sure we have the right stores, in the right place, with the right space.

“Whilst our store rotation programme involves closing some stores, it also means relocating and opening new stores in locations across the country.
