Despite the recent trend of store closures, supermarkets are opening new locations on the lead-up to Christmas

Aldi has announced plans to open 16 new stores in the lead-up to Christmas as part of the supermarket giant's wider expansion plans.

These new locations will be opened between Thursday November 6 and Friday December 12 2025, and come amid a wave of store closures that have swept Britain's high streets in recent years.

Currently the UK's fourth-largest supermarket, Aldi is investing £650million across Britain through its store opening and refurbishment programme in 2025.

Each new supermarket is expected to create 40 jobs in a boon for local communities.

Furthermore, Aldi recently confirmed it would be doubling down on its investment with a £1.6billion commitment over the next two years, opening 40 stores each year.

Jonathan Neale, the managing director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK, said: "At Aldi, we’re focused on making affordable, high-quality food accessible to as many people as possible - and opening new stores is at the heart of how we do that.

"Launching 16 new stores in just over five weeks is a significant milestone for our business and a clear demonstration of the pace and ambition behind our growth plans. It means more communities will benefit from Aldi’s value and choice in the weeks ahead and beyond."

On top of this, Aldi has launched an recruitment drive to hire more than 4,500 store colleagues across the UK ahead of the festive season.

What are the fastest growing chain outlets in the UK?

GREEN STREET

According to data from PwC, a total of 12,804 shops and outlets belonging to multiples and chains left UK high streets, shopping centres and retail parks in 2024.

This is equivalent to 35 closures per day, a decrease from last year and the second fewest closures in a decade, with store closures being only lower in 2022.

However, openings appear to be following a similar trend, with numbers slowing slightly to 25 per day.

This is an improvement from the number of store openings during the pandemic but lower than the 34 per day peak during the mid-2010s.
