Lloyds Bank, Halifax and NatWest are among the banks closing branches this month

Bank branch closures are continuing to sweep British high streets in October 2025 Lloyds Bank, NatWest and Halifax among the financial institutions axing locations in towns and cities across the UK.

Research conducted by consumer champion Which? found that more than 6,000 branch closures took place in Britain between 2015 and 2024.


High street banks and building societies have begun shutting branches down in response to changing consumer behaviour and the rise of online banking services.

Despite the launch of community banking hubs in areas impacted by closures, concerns have been raised about the impact of physical cash services.

Notably, some bank and building society branches will temporarily close this month as part of refurbishment projections, but will reopen at a later date.

​A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson said: “The way people are banking has changed, with over 21 million customers choosing our apps to manage their money. We’re providing more choice than ever before, bringing together the best in digital convenience with our people.

"Alongside our app, our customers can use any Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland branch, the Post Office or Banking Hubs for their everyday banking, and deposit cash at over 30,000 PayPoint locations."

A NatWest spokesperson added: "Banking has changed dramatically in recent years, with an increased demand for mobile and online services, as our customers benefit from a faster and easier way to bank. Closing a branch is a decision we take very seriously.

"We know it can affect those who are less confident with the alternatives we offer. We'll always work hard to guide and support you through the changes and find the best way to serve you from now on."
