Is your local bank branch closing down?

Halifax is set to close 18 of its branches in September 2025 as more high street banks and building societies continue to reduce the size of their in-person network.

In recent years, bank branch closures have become an ongoing trend in Britain with more consumers opting to take advantage of online banking services in-lieu of physical banks.

However, this trend has been criticised by consumer rights groups and campaigners due to impacting peoples' ability to access cash services.

According to research conducted by Which?, more than 6,000 bank branches have closed for good in Britain since 2015.

Earlier this year, research commissioned by PwC found that almost 1,000 bank branches closed in the last two years on a net basis, forcing customers to travel further or use online services.

The findings, based on a survey by Green Street, noted that this is having an impact on footfall in Britain's high streets, which store closures also ramping up over the same period.

Speaking to Bloomberg, PwC's senior retailer adviser Kien Tan said: "One of the main reasons that high streets are losing footfall is because there are far fewer banks. The number of banks has halved in 10 years. That’s massive."

According to Sam Richardson, Which?'s deputy editor, said that the bank closures represent a "seismic shift" in how Britons manage their money.
