Marbella is a stunning part of Spain that is incredibly popular thanks to its glamorous nightclubs, designer boutiques and gorgeous beaches.
But according to TUI travel experts, savvy British holidaymakers are increasingly looking just along the coast for a destination that delivers the same sunshine and style, without the eye-watering price tag.
Many people are considering Estepona, Marbella’s quieter neighbour. It has reinvented itself as one of southern Spain’s most appealing under-the-radar hotspots.
Once known as a sleepy fishing town, Estepona now blends modern Mediterranean dining, stylish rooftop bars and a beautifully pedestrianised old town with authentic Andalusian charm. Crucially for UK travellers watching their budgets, prices are dramatically lower, according to the experts.

Estepona is a quieter alternative to Marbella

In Marbella, especially around Puerto Banús, cocktails can easily hit €20 or more. In Estepona’s old town, well-made drinks typically cost between €10–€12, which is roughly half the price.
Low-key favourites like Reinaldo, Louie Louie and The Old Town Bar serve cocktails on pretty, pedestrianised streets where the atmosphere feels relaxed rather than exclusive. For sunset views, TikTaro Rooftop Bar and beachfront venues near the marina offer sea views and polished surroundings.
Estepona’s food scene is another big draw. Traditional tapas bars sit alongside contemporary Mediterranean restaurants, with menus centred around fresh seafood, local produce and Andalusian classics.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
Popular spots such as La Escollera, El Pescador and Restaurante Altezza are known for generous portions and strong value.
A three-course meal with wine typically costs €30 to €40 per person, compared to €50 to €70 or more in Marbella’s smarter restaurants. Even beachfront chiringuitos remain refreshingly affordable, with grilled fish and cold beers that won’t blow the holiday budget.
For nightlife, Estepona swaps megaclubs for grown-up cocktail lounges, live music venues and social late-night bars.
Beyond food and drink, the town has invested heavily in pedestrianising its historic centre, adding public art and upgrading its seafront promenade. The result is a polished yet authentic feel. Instead of designer label-lined streets, the old town is dotted with independent boutiques and artisan shops.

Estepona is a charming and affordable resort town
| GETTYBritish travellers will find it easy to get to. Less than an hour’s drive from Málaga Airport, everything in Estepona is walkable once you arrive, from beaches to bars to boutique-lined squares.
TUI is currently offering four-night breaks to the Hona Valle Romano Resort in Estepona from £256 per person, based on two people sharing a self-catering apartment, travelling from London Luton Airport on May 9.
The price includes overseas airport transfers and hand luggage, making it an affordable way to sample the Costa del Sol this spring, according to the travel experts.
