A free hack using only water can promote skin that looks younger and smoother, according to an expert

Washing your face in cold water could be the secret to achieving a "healthy glow" at any age, a skin care expert has said.

She spoke about why this technique works and the best way to do so.

Certified beauty expert with over 15 years of experience at face yoga app Luvly Jillian Osborne explained more.

She said: "Cold water rinses, typically performed after cleansing and before applying products, can invigorate the skin.

"The cold water constricts blood vessels to remove toxins and reduce inflammation and tightens pores for a smoother appearance.

"This stimulates circulation - as well as your senses - leaving you with a healthy glow and full of energy."

Using cold water on your face is a simple anti-ageing hack but it can be difficult to endure at first. Jillian shared tips for getting started.

She continued: "Gradually introduce cold splashes to build tolerance, starting with 10 splashes and working your way up to a few minutes.

"If your hands are particularly sensitive, consider an ice globe you can keep in your fridge or freezer."

Cold water has been shown to reduce puffiness which can lead to a more youthful appearance, as well as temporarily minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Some research also suggests it promotes the production of collagen, which is a protein that plays a role in strengthening the skin and improving elasticity.

As you age, collagen in the body starts to break down and many people will look for supplements and products that promise to boost this.

Dr Nisa Aslam told GB News: "Skin suffers throughout life unless you look after it with a good consistent skin care routine. According to research from Hada Labo Tokyo, 30 per cent of women have noticed their skin change with the years.

"The basic principles of skin care through the decades are the same – [you should] cleanse, hydrate and moisturise, making sure your hydrator and moisturiser products contain hyaluronic acid.

"It’s important to start as soon as you can to prevent skin ageing which will soon gather apace unless you take action. A hydrator, cleanser and moisturiser to suit your skin type will be helpful.

"Make sure your hydrator contains hyaluronic acid to ensure your skin not only looks good but protects against ageing. Hyaluronic acid is a must to retain youthful skin. A sunscreen with SPF 50 is also important.”
