Tesco has unveiled a new sandwich that pays tribute to one of Britain's most beloved savoury treats.

The Pork Pie Inspired Sandwich began appearing on shelves across more than 1,000 stores nationwide from Monday, offering customers a fresh take on a quintessentially British flavour combination.

The limited-edition creation features sliced pork pie meat paired with cheddar cheese and piccalilli relish, all served on malted brown bread.

The launch comes amid research revealing a surprising gap in culinary experience among younger generations.

According to Tesco's findings, nearly a third of Britons aged 18 to 24 have never sampled a traditional pork pie.

The figure stands at 32 per cent, despite 84 per cent of the wider population having tried the classic savoury snack.

Dave Nicholls, Buying Manager of Food To Go at Tesco, said: "We know the nation loves a pork pie, which is why we've developed this new Pork Pie Inspired Sandwich.

"Bringing together classic flavours like piccalilli, cheddar and mustard, it's a delicious addition to our Meal Deal range, perfectly timed for the start of picnic season or a great way to try something new for lunch."

The sandwich draws inspiration from the traditional Ploughman's lunch, combining familiar British flavours in a portable format.

Shoppers will have ten weeks to try the new addition before it disappears from shelves.

The product has been designed to appeal to Meal Deal customers seeking authentic British tastes.

Its arrival coincides neatly with the approaching warmer months, positioning it as an ideal option for outdoor dining.

The supermarket's sales data underscores the enduring popularity of the humble pork pie among British consumers.

Tesco shifted more than 86 million pork pies over the past year, representing a three per cent increase on the previous twelve months.

The Midlands emerged as the nation's pork pie heartland, accounting for 18 per cent of all sales.

Interestingly, the Tesco Redditch Extra store claimed the title of top seller, outpacing even outlets in Melton Mowbray, the town traditionally regarded as the spiritual home of the pork pie.

Research into eating habits revealed that 44 per cent of Britons enjoy pork pies as a snack, whilst 39 per cent consume them at lunchtime.

A small but dedicated five per cent admitted to eating them for breakfast.
