The retailer has urged shoppers to check their freezers and return affected products for a refund

Tesco shoppers are being urged to check their freezers after the supermarket giant recalled one of its premium desserts over safety fears.

The Tesco Finest Summer Edition Chocolate Affogato Dessert is being pulled from shelves because it may contain pieces of plastic, making it unsafe to eat.

The recall affects 538g packs with best-before dates up to and including April 2027. It is the latest food safety scare to hit the retailer, which has issued recall notices in stores to warn customers about the potential contamination.

Anyone who has purchased the dessert should avoid eating it under any circumstances, as the plastic contamination poses a genuine danger to consumers.

Customers who have the dessert at home should return it to any Tesco store, where they'll receive a full refund without any fuss. There is no need to bring a receipt – simply take the product back and staff will sort out the refund.

For anyone wanting more information, Tesco's customer service team can be reached through their website at tesco.com/help/contact.

The Food Standards Agency has explained that when a food product has a problem that makes it unsuitable for sale, it can either be withdrawn from shelves or recalled.

A recall is more serious – it's when customers are actively asked to bring products back. The FSA issues Product Recall Information Notices to keep both shoppers and local authorities informed about food safety issues.

This recall comes just days after Tesco pulled another product from its shelves over bacterial contamination concerns.

The Curing Barn British Bresaola, an Italian-style air-dried beef sold in 60g packets at ÂŁ4.50, was urgently recalled after Listeria monocytogenes was detected.

Listeriosis can cause flu-like symptoms, including high temperature, muscle pain, chills, sickness and diarrhoea.

In severe cases, it can lead to serious complications like meningitis.

Those most at risk include people over 65, pregnant women, babies under one month old, and anyone with a weakened immune system.
