Sainsbury's will close one store and shoppers will be able to visit nearby

Sainsbury's has announced a UK store will close for good within days.

A branch in London will have its final day of trading this weekend.

The Sainsbury's is located in Whitgift Centre in Croydon and it has been open for more than 50 years.

Shoppers won't need to go too far for another location though as nearby branches remain open.

A Sainsbury's statement said: "We understand this will be an unsettling time for those affected and we are supporting them in every way we can.

"This includes exploring alternative roles for colleagues within Sainsbury’s.

“Customers will continue to be able to shop with us at a number of nearby Sainsbury’s stores, including our West Croydon Station Local, George Streel Local and Croydon High Street Local stores."

This comes as WHSmith announced plans to shut one UK branches within weeks.

Supermarket giant Tesco has recently shut two stores for good.

Sainsbury's shoppers will not miss out because of the closures, however, as the retailer shared plans to open more UK stores earlier this year.

So far in 2023, new branches have opened in London, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Oxfordshire.

Most recently it has changed the shopping experience by opening its first ever cafe inside a Sainsbury's store.

This is a partnership between the retailer and Greggs. A Greggs cafe has opened in the Crystal Peaks store.

Shoppers can pick up tasty baked treats, sandwiches and coffee available for sit in or to takeaway.

Sainsbury’s director of commercial partnerships Elizabeth Newman said: “We’re delighted to have welcomed Greggs to another Sainsbury’s store, this time in the form of a fantastic café concept that represents another first for our customers.

“Greggs has proven very popular at Sainsbury’s petrol station in Biggleswade and we’re expecting the new café in Crystal Peaks to build on its success – I’m really looking forward to hearing what our customers think.”

If visiting Sainsbury's stores, shoppers will notice a number of changes.
