Your skin care routine can help prevent the signs of ageing

A good skin care routine does not take long to execute, but it can have a dramatic impact on your complexion.

Speaking to GB News, a doctor explained where people go wrong with their routines and why daily SPF is a must.

With an endless supply of beauty products on the market, it can be tempting to buy them all, but this isn't necessary.

According to facial plastic surgeon and co-founder of Keller Plastic Surgery, Dr Gregory Keller, skin care is often overcomplicated.

He said: "One common misconception many people have when it comes to skin care is that more is better. People often use too many products, thinking it will speed up results, but overloading your skin with ingredients can lead to irritation and breakouts.

"Use a targeted routine that includes cleansing, hydration, and anti-ageing products."

The doctor suggested looking for lotions that include powerful anti-ageing ingredients, with a real focus on regular cleansing, hydration and sunscreen.

He added: "Another misconception is skipping sunscreen on cloudy days or thinking that a higher SPF once a day is enough. The truth is, reapplication throughout the day is essential for proper sun protection.

SPF isn't just for the summer months, either. Even on cloudy days, harmful UV rays can penetrate the skin, so wearing product year-round will protect against sun damage and visible ageing.

Dr Keller said: "Sun protection is non-negotiable. UV rays are one of the primary causes of premature ageing, so applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is critical.

"Whether it is sunny or cloudy, sunscreen should be a staple in every skin care routine to protect against sun damage and maintain youthful skin."

There have been many studies into the effects of SPF on ageing. One randomised trial reviewed sunscreen and prevention of skin ageing, following more than 900 adults for 4.5 years.

It found those who applied sunscreen daily showed no detectable increase in skin ageing, while occasional users did.

Daily sunscreen users had about 24 per cent less skin ageing compared to those who used it only when they felt like it. The researchers concluded that regular sunscreen use can actually slow visible ageing of the skin, and not just prevent sunburn and other sun damage.
