A well-designed garden means you're buying more than just a house - you're buying a lifestyle, too

More often than not, it’s easy to become entangled and obsessive over the interior design of your home before putting it up for sale.

But it can be just as essential to add a bit more love and care into the garden, which could add thousands to the whole property’s value, a property expert claimed.

Plenty of homeowners opt to revamp their bathroom or kitchen to add value, but Terry Fisher has claimed that a "well-thought-out" garden can be the factor to make your home feel "more desirable and complete".

"It’s not just about size - it's about how practical, inviting and well-designed the space is," he said. "

Buyers are drawn to outdoor spaces that feel like an extension of the home, and certain features really help create that."

The expert shared his five simple gardening tips for a more lucrative house sale.

1. A well-manicured lawn

A seemingly simple fact, but it's true: a tidy lawn can make your property more valuable by giving an instant impression of maintenance.

"A neat lawn tells buyers the whole property has been looked after," Terry explained. "It’s a simple feature, but it makes the garden feel ready to use - like somewhere you could step into straight away and enjoy."

Something about the clean, green stripes up and down a garden entices a buyer by creating a cleaner look.

2. Seating areas

Even cheap and cheerful garden furniture can go a long way - just a simple, well-looked-after bench can work wonders when putting your house on the market.

The addition can help the buyers envision themselves relaxing in the summer or entertaining guests in the open air, Terry explained, adding: "A seating area helps create that picture. It turns a plain garden into a space for living."

3. Outdoor lighting

Whether it's fairy lights or wall-mounted fixtures, a lightly decorated garden can create a welcoming atmosphere in your home, and might even help make it seem bigger to interested candidates.

Particularly effective during viewings at dusk, the subtle addition "shows the space is usable all year round", Terry said. "It creates a mood and makes the garden feel bigger and more inviting."

4. A simple, attractive border

Coinciding perfectly with springtime and the glorious sunshine in Britain, now might be the time to add some extra pizzazz to your garden.

Adding some easy-to-create flower beds or raised planters adds a vibrancy and structure to your home, without creating extra work. People can be turned off by gardens that appear like they require hours of hard work.

Investing in some perennials might be a good idea, such as lavender or peonies, which return each year to add beautiful shades to your home. "Borders soften a space and make it feel loved - but keep it simple and easy to maintain," Terry advised.

5. Privacy features

Of course, one of the most important features of a garden is that it provides a private sanctuary, just for the homeowner alone. Remedied by a simple hedge, fence or tall planting, Terry said, privacy is crucial.

"Most buyers want a garden that feels like a private retreat, not a goldfish bowl," Terry said. Gaining some extra privacy from neighbours or busy roads can create a sentiment of "security and calm", - becoming a huge selling advantage.

But, of course, a garden alone cannot bolster the price of your home. A strong combination of well-considered interior and exterior design will make a "big difference" to how the property is viewed.

"A well-designed garden shows buyers they’ll get more than just a house - they’re buying a lifestyle. And that’s what makes them more willing to pay a premium," he proclaimed.
