The 007 actor was raised in a riverside town before moving stateside to forge a career in acting

Pierce Brosnan is best known for his role as suave secret agent James Bond, which he took on as the successor of Roger Moore.

He won plaudits for his fifth official performance in the movie and is still considered one of the biggest Hollywood actors.

In his former years, Brosnan lived in Putney and attended the area’s Elliott School, a modern state establishment where he landed the nickname ‘Irish’ while there.

“Bring an Irish immigrant in London in ‘64, they don’t let you forget that,” the actor recalled in an interview with the Guardian.

At 15, Brosnan set out to become an actor and joined a theatre group. He subsequently studied at Drama Centre London.

Putney is widely known for becoming the starting point of the Oxford and Cambridge University boat race in 1856.

“Located on the River Thames in South West London, Putney is a highly sought-after area with nearby links to London and fabulous green spaces, river walks and views," note real estate agents at Fine Country.

“Listed as one of the 35 major centres of Greater London, Putney is the perfect place to call home and is enjoyed by couples, families and young working professionals.”

As part of the borough of Wandsworth, residents in the area benefit from some of the city’s lowest council tax rates.

“Putney Bridge was the second connection to ever be built across the Thames, preceded by none other than London Bridge itself and was first erected in 1729 to link London with the rest of the South West," adds Fine Country.

The friendly neighbourhood has more to offer than good council tax. Residents are spoilt for choice when it comes to greenery and quiet open spaces.

In a past interview, Brosnan admitted to spending a lot of time in Bishops Park and Harry Hayes Record shop on Fulham Road.

Another actor who enjoys life on the border of the Thames is Dame Helen Mirren, who owns a 19th-century four-story Georgian townhouse in Wapping.

The sprawling property is reportedly located on the edge of the water and looks over a large communal garden.

“London is blessed with many waterside neighbourhoods, but the EW1 postcode has a strong case for the best of the lot.”

St Katherine Docks, a hub for taverns and restaurants, is among the most popular spots to visit in the area.

The area was also once the execution dock where pirates would be hanged for their crimes.
