Product recalls must always be taken seriously to ensure shopper safety

Just days after Iceland issued a product safety alert, two dangerous products sold via TikTok have been recalled due to serious risks.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) reported that the Hair Straightener WT-056 with Black Protective Glove presents a "serious risk of electric shock".

Meanwhile, Brown Safety Trainers falsely advertised as protective equipment present a "serious risk of injuries".

Both products have been recalled from end users following notifications from Local Authority Trading Standards.

The listings have also been removed by TikTok's online marketplace after the safety violations were identified.

Hair Straightener WT-056 with Black Protective Glove

Products sold via TikTok have been recalled due to serious safety risks

OPSS

Hair Straightener WT-056 with Black Protective Glove sold via TikTok (2505-0132)

Type: Electrical appliances and equipment - Hair straightener

Brand: Guangzhou Welltop Intelligent Appliance Co. Ltd

Model: RC01/WT-056

TikTok listing name: 2 in 1 Hair Straightener, Mini Hair Straightening Machine, Hair Styling Tool for Women & Girls, Professional Hair Styling Tool for Home & Salon Use

Country of Origin: China

Product Description: A black and gold hair straightener with a black power supply plug - packaged in a rectangular cardboard box

The Hair Straightener WT-056 with Black Protective Glove presents a serious risk of electric shock as the fuse is below the minimum specified length and is incorrectly rated, the OPSS warned.

Under fault conditions, the fuse may not provide the required protection and the appliance could short-circuit, presenting a risk of electric shock.

The product also contains insulation wiring, which is in contact with unearthed, accessible metal parts.

The hair straightener does not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 or the Plugs & Sockets (Safety) Regulations 1994.

Brown Safety Trainers sold via TikTok (2505-0077)

Type: Personal protective equipment (PPE) - Safety trainers

Brand: Gaomi Anbaili Shoes Co., Ltd

Model: FZ-99

TikTok listing name: Men's Anti-smash and Anti-puncture shoe, Breathable Non-slip work shoes, Comfortable Safety Shoes for Men, Fashionable Shoes for Daily Wear, Boy

Country of Origin: China

Product Description: Brown and orange trainers with brown laces

The OPSS explained that the Brown Safety Trainers present a "serious risk of injuries" because, although advertised as "anti-smash" and "anti-puncture", there is no evidence that the product has undergone conformity assessment as Personal Protective Equipment.

The trainers are not CE or UKCA marked, which are required safety certifications.

The product does not meet the requirements of the Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on Personal Protective Equipment or the Personal Protective Equipment (Enforcement) Regulations 2018.

Users who purchased the trainers, believing they offered genuine workplace protection, could face "serious injury risks" when relying on the falsely advertised safety features.

The recalled products do not meet safety requirements and regulations

OPSS

Aico has recalled its Ei3014 Heat Detector after a small quantity was produced with plastic coverings incorrectly stating they could detect carbon monoxide.

The devices are suitable for detecting heat in kitchens or garages, but cannot detect carbon monoxide.

The mislabelling may result in consumers being unaware that their installed alarm is for heat detection only, the OPSS warned.

The product does not meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005, prompting the recall from end users.
