Bread sold at the supermarket poses a health risk to specific consumers

Iceland is the latest supermarket to issue a food recall, just days after a potentially dangerous product was called back from Tesco, Asda, and Morrisons.

Daily Bakery 4 Sub Rolls have been recalled because they may contain barley, which is not mentioned on the label.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) warned that this poses a health risk to consumers with a barley allergy or gluten intolerance.

Officials advised: "If you have bought the above product, do not eat it." Instead, customers should return the sub rolls to any Iceland retail store, where they will receive a full refund without needing to provide a receipt.

Iceland confirmed that the recall is a "precautionary measure" and has contacted relevant allergy support organisations to inform their members about it.

Point of sale notices will be displayed in all Iceland stores selling the product to explain the recall and advise customers on what action to take.

Speaking on barley allergies, doctors from Enticare stated: "Symptoms can appear within minutes to hours after consuming barley.

"These may include itching, hives, swelling of the lips, face, tongue, or throat, and difficulty breathing.

"Barley allergy can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain. These symptoms may mimic other gastrointestinal disorders, making diagnosis challenging.

"Chronic symptoms include eczema, asthma, and allergic rhinitis. Persistent exposure to barley can exacerbate these conditions, leading to more severe health issues over time."

Bupa provides information on gluten intolerance, which is "when your body reacts badly to gluten".

Gluten intolerance symptoms are similar to those of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and coeliac disease.

Gastrointestinal symptoms may include abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea, and constipation, while on-gastrointestinal symptoms include headaches, tiredness, brain fog, joint and muscle pain, and skin rash.

Food and product recalls must always be taken seriously to ensure customer safety. The FSA explained why allergy alerts are issued.

About allergy alerts

"Sometimes there will be a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold. Then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product).

"Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect, or if there is any other food allergy risk. When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert."
